From 6 April 2027, most unused UK pensions funds and death benefits on non-UK retirement funds will be included in a deceased person’s estate for Inheritance Tax (IHT) purposes whether the individual is tax resident in the UK or not. This represents a further extension of UKs IHT rules which transitioned to a residence-based framework from 6 April 2025.
In addition, major changes to Australian tax rules were announced in the May Federal Budget, some of which (capital gains tax rules) apply from 1 July 2027, and others (relating to Trusts) apply from 1 July 2028.
Never has there been a time when it is so important to understand the tax changes that affect you, particularly if you hold assets in foreign jurisdictions such as the UK.
In this webinar, tax experts from Majenda, Forest Wealth and Fairway Tax & Accounting will explore the key cross border issues that Australian resident individuals with interests in the UK should be aware of. This will include a summary of the main tax issues along with an exploration of the UK pension options, including the use of SIPPS as well as transferring funds to an Australian QROPS, if and when the individual is eligible to do so.
