'Brexit: challenges and opportunities'

Remo will discuss a number of subjects related to Brexit from Australia’s perspective, including: the reasons for the referendum; why it turned out the way it did; what the legal and negotiating processes will be between the EU and UK; how long it will take; and explore the challenges and opportunities for Australia. 

Remo Moretta is the Assistant Secretary responsible for Australia’s trade relations with Europe and Brexit. He served as Australia’s Deputy High Commissioner to New Zealand from 2012 to 2015. Mr Moretta has experience in trade policy and negotiations spanning over 20 years. He has served as First Secretary to the Permanent Mission to the WTO in Geneva and as Counsellor for Trade in the Australian Embassy in Washington.

His previous positions and roles include: Assistant Secretary for Agriculture and Food and Australia’s Chief Agriculture negotiator; a lead negotiator on the Australia-US Free Trade Agreement negotiations; negotiator on WTO accessions including China, Taiwan and Russia; The Trans-Pacific Partnership negotiations; serving as a panellist on two WTO dispute cases; chairmanship of the WTO Committee on Customs Valuation and the WTO Committee on Subsidies and Countervailing measures; serving as a Director on the Board of the WTO Pension Fund; and the post-Uruguay Round negotiations on telecommunications and financial services.
