Her Excellency Menna Rawlings CMG and His Excellency The Hon Alexander Downer AC
‘The UK and Australia - Indispensable Partners’
Her Excellency Menna Rawlings CMG has been the British High Commissioner to Australia since April 2015.
His Excellency The Hon Alexander Downer AC was appointed Australian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom in March 2014.
Prime Minister May has made clear that she intends to trigger Article 50 “by the END of March” (emphasis intended). As the UK approaches the triggering of Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty to begin the process of exiting the European Union, we are delighted to have the two High Commissioners of the Australian British Relationship to speak to the Chamber.
The discussion will cover the process for the withdrawal, the current situation for Australian and British businesses and the outlook for the future, the current Trade Working Group announced by Secretary of State Liam Fox and Minister Ciobo in September 2016 and the broader context of foreign affairs in which these conversations will be held.
Both Australia and the UK have an interest in ensuring that we maintain our strong relationships with the EU, from the UK perspective as they leave the EU, and Australia as we embark on formal negotiations of the EU Australia Free Trade Agreement in the latter part of the year.
The ABCC CEO, DAvid McCredie, moderated an engaging and informative discussion with these two central figures in the Australian British relationship at this historic point in the relationship.
