Corporate Team Development Challenge

The Gurkha Challenge for Corporates

In May, twenty Gurkhas will arrive in Sydney to support, with the Australian Army, Gurkhas Australia efforts to raise funds to rebuild 24 of the 1700 Gurkha veteran’s homes destroyed in the Nepalese earthquakes. Gurkhas have fought alongside Australian soldiers since Gallipoli.

Gurkhas Australia are running two days of events, one aimed at Year 12 students from Sydney schools on Sunday 21st May; the other with corporates on the following morning of Monday 22nd May. Both days include a Gurkha Challenge with 12 teams each supported by a very special Australian Army Officer and a Gurkha Rifleman, followed by a Gurkha military chef cooked fundraising curry meal along with some remarkable speakers, martial demonstrations and personal stories.

The objective of these activities is to help raise sufficient funds to rebuild veteran’s homes destroyed in the Nepal earthquakes. With Vice-Regal encouragement, Prime Ministerial support for a heavyweight Federal presence  (it is a sitting day for the House of Representatives), Army and British Government in attendance, there will be high profile speakers, media and political impact.

The Gurkha Challenge

This is a unique event aimed at team development, client bonding, and leadership reflection. Developed and facilitated by Unilever’s Leadership and Organisational Development team, together with Army, corporates, elite sports coaches and a number of distinguished consultants, these challenges exemplify military innovation, leadership and team building skills.

Corporate teams of between ten and twelve will have an Army Officer and Gurkha Rifleman attached to each team. Participants will engage and reflect on a series of challenges that are engaging, thought provoking, challenging and entertaining.

Through matched fund raising, training and development budgets or other initiatives, corporate teams commit to funding one or more rebuilt Gurkha veteran’s earthquake damaged home for $15,000 each, which may be tax deductible.  Aside from a unique experience and Gurkha Challenge clothing, corporate teams will subsequently be presented with a photograph of the veteran’s rebuilt home.
